Eric Nystrom Shows Off His Cooking Skills On the Flames' Homepage

If there is one thing Calgary Flames' Eric Nystrom and I3E's Jon DiFlorio share in common, its a love of food!  Check out Eric's pre-game meals by clicking on the video below.  To learn more about performance eating, check out our page on nutrition.

ESPN featured the 2009 Summer Workouts of NHLers Komisarek, Higgins and Nystrom on their Hockey home page.

ESPN Comes to I3E for NHL Player's Car Push/Pull

Institute 3E is known by professional athletes all over the country, and the international community as well. Today, August 14th, was another opportunity for I3E to spread its name when reporters from ESPN came to watch four NHL players participate in I3E's Strongman Workouts, featuring, among others, former Habs Mike Komiserak and Chris Higgins, as well as Calgary Flames forward Eric Nystrom and Stanley Cup champion Bill Guerin. They all pulled and pushed Higgins’ new Mercedes up and down a parking lot across the street from I3E. When asked whose car was being shoved and tugged around, Billy Guerin responded to the reporter, “It’s Higgins’ because the rest of us can’t afford it.” Komiserak, Higgins' buddy and former teammate, made frequent jokes about messing up Higgins’ new ride. Look in ESPN magazines for an article about Institute 3E, and maybe on ESPN.com.

Jon DiFlorio Recognized as PICP Level 4, International Coach

Congratulations to I3E founder Jon DiFlorio on his completion of all necessary tasks needed to reach level 4 in the Poliquin International Certification Program (PICP). DiFlorio is now the only Level 4 certified trainer in New York State. The Poliquin website states that this level of certification is solely for well-established strength coaches who coach at the international and/or professional sports level. This achievement is truly an outstanding one, but Jon’s influence in the sports world clearly shows that he is worthy of this acknowledgement. Having coached athletes at the professional level and at the World Cup level, Jon has truly found his calling. He is now an Internationally Certified Coach (ICC). This is not the end of DiFlorio’s ambitious dedication to self-improvement and the improvement of others. The PICP program offers a fifth level as well.

Road Food

Jon DiFlorio prides himself on touching all bases when it comes to teaching athletes the most practical ways to succeed. A good roadtrip snack he often recommends to the athletes is jerky, fruit and nuts. Occasionally, his athletes take on roadtrips jerky… or sometimes fruit…  and once in a while nuts, for the sake of convenience. Jon has taken it upon himself to fix the problem. With the help of Mike Beretta from Beretta Farms, Jon has put together a few prototypes of bags with jerky, nuts, and fruit all together. The recipe is in the works and there are several prototypes already made. The healthiest snack on the market is grass-fed, organic and gluten free. The pro athletes who have tried it so far, such as Mike Komisarek, JP Foschi and Gary Roberts, have all been beyond impressed with the product. Keep an eye out; if you’re lucky you might be able to get a shot at a prototype too.

Up and Coming: The Ultimate In-Season Perform & Recover Protocol

Our elite athletes are often challenged with trying to figure out what supplements they should be taking during the season. Due to this confusion, we at I3E are working with Designs for Health to create the ultimate in-season protocol. The product will include pre-workout supplements that are designed to increase focus and improve performance and post workout supplements that will aid in muscle mass maintenance and recovery. All of the ingredients are accounted for in the protocol, the final obstacle is the packaging. Coming soon...

I3E Training Buddies Reunited and Recharged Eric Nystrom is pumped to have his training buddy, former New York Ranger, Christopher Higgins, as a new teammate. The boys grew up together on Long Island, and they trained with I3E’s Jon DiFlorio for the paste five summers. On February 3rd, both men could be seen on the same ice during the Calgary Flames’ 4-1 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes. Nystrom and Higgins played excellent games, as always, with a lot of hustle and grit. Nystrom started off with a couple shots on Hurricanes’ goalie Cam Ward that quickly led to an assist. The two Flames are excited to be playing together, and now have a common goal, to win the Stanley Cup with the Calgary Flames.

JP Knows Failing to Prepare is Preparing to Fail

It may sound cliché, but failing to prepare is preparing to fail. To survive in the big leagues, you need to not only recognize that, but also act on it. Just two and a half weeks after the Cincinnati Bengals finished their 2009-2010 season, TE JP Foschi was already back at Institute 3E looking to get his body fresh for next season. Jon DiFlorio has custom designed a program for him. He has already begun his first phase, which is a structural balance program. This phase is a 5-day per week dedication, and two of the days have split routines (meaning morning and afternoon activity). The preparation phase of the program is designed to balance out his body, treat dysfunction, and prepare him for higher-level strength exercises. At Institute 3E we understand the importance of a multi-faceted approach. Here is a sample week of JP’s program.

Nystrom Featured On MSG

Hockey is a sport known for its physicality and brutality. It isn’t uncommon for a player to skate off the ice with blood on his jersey. I3E athlete, Eric Nystrom, stained his jersey with Anaheim Ducks’ Kyle Chipchura’s blood on Sunday, January 17. With a minute remaining in the opening period, Ny’s Calgary Flames were down two goals and in dire need of momentum. Eric knew his role as the energy player who creates scoring opportunities and tried to ignite the Flames. Nystrom challenged Chipchura during a faceoff, and they dropped the gloves for the second time this season. The battle was heated and lasted over half of a minute. Nystrom really took advantage of the opportunity to show off his brute strength and explosive power. A hard left hook tore open the right side of Chipchura’s face. The 6’2”, 204 lb Center wasn’t even able to skate to the penalty box. Thanks to 6’1”, 193 lb Eric Nystrom and his razor-like fists, Chipchura had to be escorted to the locker room for medical attention. The energy was unquestionably evident during the next period as the Flames dominated throughout the 20 minutes. By the end of the 2nd, the Flames went from losing 3-2 to leading 4-3. The fight was shown that following Saturday as one of the Top Plays of the Week on MSG’s Hockey Night Live. Nystrom has really dedicated himself to his energy-player position and it has consistently paid off for the Flames.

Rooting For the Real New Yorker - "Who Dey?!"

At 4:30pm on January 9, 2010, either Cincinnati Bengals’ Shayne Graham or New York Jets’ Jay Feely will kick off the 2010 NFL playoffs at Paul Brown Stadium in Ohio. I3E athlete JP Foschi was limited last week by a neck injury, and since the game had no bearing on the Bengals’ postseason appearance, he was asked to sit out of the game. This week, JP is all ready to go run through the Jets’ #1-ranked defensive squad… or so we hope. In the last 19 years the Bengals have only 2 winning seasons and 0 playoff wins. In the last 19 seasons however, Cincinnati didn’t have I3E prodigy JP Foschi at Tight End. This off-season New Yorker is dedicated, powerful, and smart with the football. He is determined to dominate his home state’s only postseason representation all the way from Ohio. With statistics showing opportunity for both teams and players on each side with intent to kill, this game could go either way. It will not be an easy win for either side. JP has proven himself to be ready for this heated competition. At New York’s athletic development facility, Institute 3E, we will be rooting for the real New Yorker and his boys in Cincinnati.

Good luck to JP and his Bengals in the 2010 NFL Playoffs!

Higgins Finishes Strong

On January 4th, the New York Rangers played their second game of 2010 at Madison Square Garden against the Boston Bruins. The game was close and with exactly four and a half minutes left in regulation, the score was 2-2. During his training at I3E, Rangers’ left wingman Christopher Higgins always finished his workouts as strong as he started, no matter how red in the face he was. Nobody expected anything less on the ice, and in the end he came through. After almost an hour of hard play, Higgins battled on the boards to win control of a loose puck and as Bruins’ goalie Tuukka Rask slid over to protect the front of this crease, he let go of a quick backhand to the short-side post. On that play Higgins scored his first goal at MSG this year, and sent the Bruins to the locker room with their heads down. Christopher Higgins’ endurance and persistence has carried over into his game, and the New York Rangers now have another W to show for it. Saturday, January 9th, the Bruins will be given the chance to get revenge on Chris and his boys, but if he keeps playing the way he did on Monday, the Bruins won’t be able to stop him.

I3E Athlete Selected For Olympic Team

I3E is proud to share the recent news that Mike Komisarek was recently selected to represent the United States of America in this year’s Olympic competition. The good news came immediately following the 2010 Winter Classic that 23 U.S.-born athletes had made the cut, and Mike was among them. With this honor, Mike joins an elite group of Institute 3E athletes who participated in the Olympics, including Bill Guerin and Rick DiPietro. In a conversation about the Olympic camp, Komisarek said, “[I] always strive to be the best hockey player possible. Its not a year or two years, it’s a lifetime dedication to be able to play against the best players in the world.” The staff at I3E recognizes the truth in his statement. Mike backs up his word with hard work and dedication in the gym as well as on the ice.

Best of luck to Mike Komisarek and Team USA in the 2010 Winter Olympics!

Foschi Leaves Another Mark: 2nd TD

A minute 17sec left in the first half, 3rd and Goal, leading the Browns by 3. Bengals line up on the Brown’s 8-yard line. Palmer rolls out of the pocket and fires a gun to none other than I3E’s JP Foschi running across the front of the endzone. That was one of two catches JP had during week 12 of the 2009-2010 NFL Season. He recorded 11 yards on the day. Foschi clearly has shown dedication and effort with the Bengals organization, and he gets results. I3E is proud of JP and we expectnothing less of him. Keep rolling JP.

JP's 1st NFL TD

2nd quarter… Bengals line up on Chicago’s 3 yard line… 2nd down and nine feet from putting the game six points farther out of the Bears’ reach. Palmer passes short left to I3E athlete J.P. Foschi. That play was more important than six points, and definitely more important than three yards. JP Foschi scored his first ever touchdown in the NFL. The 27 year old, four year pro stood proud in the endzone in front of all of his fans in Cincinnati. With help from JP, the Bengals trampled the Bears that night 45-10. It was a moment that neither he, nor his trainers at Institute 3E will forget.

 Two Outta Three Aint Bad

Eric Nystrom’s Calgary Flames have a 3-0 record to start the 2009-2010 NHL season. In two out of these three games, Nystrom’s impact has resounded through ESPN highlights and news articles. On Thursday against the Canucks, Eric Nystrom destroyed Ryan Johnson in the corner. (For more on the big hit, scroll down.) Then Tuesday October 6, Eric put two pucks behind Habs goalie Jaroslav Halak. Although originally credited for three (which would have been his first career hat trick) further review proved that the puck wasn’t deflected off of Ny. His two goals were an incredible contribution to the Flames win over the Canadiens, but that still wasn’t enough for Nystrom. He also dropped the gloves to take on all 208lbs of the Habs’ 6’2” centerman Kyle Chipchura. In an article on the Flames official website, Nystrom is quoted saying "He threw about 10 punches and five of them landed so I was like 'How accurate are those things?' Luckily they didn’t do too much damage. I was trying to give us a little bit of momentum because we had given up those two quick goals late in the period. That’s part of my role and it worked out pretty good." Eric Nystrom has without question recognized his role with the Flames. He continues to impress his trainers at Institute 3E, who are all anxiously awaiting the October 8th Flames game against the Edmonton Oilers.

JP Foschi Lays Down the Browns Defense... And Ochocinco.

Week 4 of the 2009 NFL season was a devastating one for the Cleveland Browns as they now are on the longest losing streak in 34 years. At the root of their problems was I3E athlete John Paul Foschi. Sunday, October 4, Foschi had 3 catches and recorded 44 yards. Among these was a 27 yard reception that set his Cincinnati Bengals up to tie the game late in the 4th quarter. The Bengals were then able to finish off the Browns with another field goal, winning the game 23-20. The first three weeks of the season, big-name Chad Ochocinco was the team leader for receiving. Not this time. JP showed the Bengals how reliable his hands can be as his 44 receiving yards on the day led the team. The Bengals now look forward to a road game on the 11th against the Baltimore Ravens. Everyone at Institute 3E is hoping to see another big game by Foschi.

Check out an official article about JP on the Bengals' website.

Eric Nystrom An-Ny-hilates Ryan Johnson... More Than A Big Hit

Friday October 2, the Calgary Flames started off their 09-10 season with a faceoff against the Vancouver Canucks. The first game of any season is a defining moment for the team as well as the individuals. Institute 3E athlete Eric Nystrom took advantage of this opportunity in less than three minutes into the first period of the game. As he followed up Ryan Johnson to the corner of the trapezoid behind Canucks’ goalie Roberto Luongo, Nystrom stepped up and put his shoulder hard into Johnson’s chest. The Canuck was beaten into the boards and down to the ice. For the rest of the game the Flames’ intensity was outstanding and the fear was evident in the Canucks’ gameplay. Eric Nystrom is making a name for himself as the guy willing to do anything for his team, including sacrifice his body. His mindset is to be an energy player who creates scoring opportunities. It worked out great for Calgary in their season opener as they took the game 5 to 3.

JP Foschi, First on The Field

27 year old JP Foschi called I3E founder Jon DiFlorio last night with a big announcement. Not too long ago John Paul was fighting hard to make the 53-Man Roster for the Cincinnati Bengals. Now, the young pro has been officially designated First String TE for the Bengals. Jon and his trainers have gotten the privilege to see Foschi develop as an athlete since he started his training program at the institute. Everyone is proud to see him working hard to acheive his goals and happy to see him line up before the other Cincinnati Tight Ends. JP currently has 8 receptions, 1 TD and 74 yards. Without question this new first string position will help him to tremendously improve these stats over the remaining 11 weeks in the NFL season.

Mike Komisarek, Not Just "A"nother Maple Leaf

During the summer of 2009, Institute 3E athlete Mike Komisarek changed his sweater from red to blue when he signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. However, the best part wasn’t the new color, it was the “A” stitched onto the chest that makes I3E proud. Komisarek has proven himself to be a true leader and it obviously did not go unnoticed in Toronto. Institute 3E wishes Mike the best of luck captaining the Leafs throughout the 2009-10 season.

I3E Athlete John Paul Foschi Selected by Cincinnati Bengals

On September 5th the Cincinnati Bengals narrowed down their roster to just 53 players. I3E wants to congratulate JP Foschi for being among the elite 53. Best of luck to John Paul and the Cincinnati Bengals.

Potential NHL First Overall Draft Pick 2010, Kira Kabanov, Trains At I3E

Kirill “Kira” Kabanov is considered by many experts as one of the top prospects in the 2010 NHL draft. Kira has been in America for one week today and has been training at Institute 3E with Jon DiFlorio and his staff. In Russia he claimed to not have worked out. Now he finds training with the boys at I3E to be “a little hard, but good.”

Though Kira does miss some aspects of his life in Russia like his family, his girlfriend, and his friends, he has been enjoying his life in America so far. His host family is very nice, there is a good mutual rapport between Kirill and his host, Mia.

Jokingly he says “Nobody can catch me here.” This is his fifth time in America and his fourth in America to play hockey. Back home Kira played in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) for Spartak Moscow. However, Kabanov likes playing hockey in America better than in Russia because of the different rinks. In Russia, he says, the rinks are a lot bigger which helps to develop speed. In America, the rinks are smaller which is better to improve skills such as stick handling and agility. Although he called skating with the Islanders “fantastic”, he does not have a favorite NHL team. As long as they draft him first overall, Kira says it doesn’t matter which team it is. Clearly, this kid just loves to play the game. In the short time he’s been with I3E, Kabanov had made some good friends of all ages and everyone wishes him the best of luck playing on his next team in Muncton until the 2010 draft.

Mike Komisarek Invited to USA Olympic Camp

Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen and I3E athlete Mike Komisarek is in the running to represent the United States of America in the upcoming winter Olympics.  As a prerequisite, he went along with 33 other invited players to Chicago for the Olympic Camp.  The camp lasted for three and a half days, all including an hour on ice, an hour workout, and bonding experiences for the guys. They got to go to a Chicago White Sox game and Mike Modano threw out the first pitch. Military personnel even came to meet with them. The rink was packed everyday according to Komisarek. “You grow up dreaming to play in the NHL and win a Stanley Cup, but to be given the opportunity to represent your country at the Olympic Level… [it] doesn’t get better than that.” Komisarek said, “You always strive to be the best hockey player possible. Its not a year or two years, it’s a lifetime dedication to be able to play against the best players in the world. The opportunity to represent your country in the Olympics is a once in a lifetime thing and it doesn’t come around very often”. In the end it was a successful camp, and Mike especially enjoyed hanging out with all of the potential Olympians. Only 23 of the 34 who were invited to camp will make the cut. Jon DiFlorio and the I3E trainers are dedicated to make sure Komisarek makes the trip to Vancouver. I3E is proud of Mike’s hard work and dedication and looks forward to his future accomplishments.

I3E's Newest Athlete, Kirill "Kira" Kabanov

Kirill Kabanov landed in America after a long flight from his home country of Russia on Saturday. He is staying with a host family and is training at Institute 3E. The I3E staff is proud to have him and it seems that he is settling in nicely. If Kira can live up to his phenominal reputation, there is a very high chance that he will soon appear on NHL ice in 2010 at the young age of 18. He played at the Russian Elite level back home at just 16 years old. Kabanov's personal take on this life-changing experience will be coming soon.

THE Stanley Cup Comes to I3E

To some, the Stanley Cup is venerated as the nicest, most honorable trophy in professional sports. Not many people get the chance to even see the Stanley Cup, let alone be privileged enough to touch it and take pictures with it.  Thanks to Cup winner Bill Guerin, trainers and athletes (and an intern) at I3E got that opportunity on Friday, August 14th. Bill’s shift with the Cup came and he made a stop at Institute 3E.  Institute 3E is priveleged to have helped Bill Guerin improve his game and his effectiveness on the ice, which in turn clearly helped the Pittsburgh Penguins throughout the Stanley Cup playoffs.  The Cups' visit will not be forgotten, and we aren't banking on it being the last time it visits here either...

Bill Guerin and I3E

For the last two years, Pittsburgh Penguins’ right wing Bill Guerin has been dedicated to improving his game and his physical condition at Institute 3E in Huntington, NY. He lives out in Oyster Bay during the off-season, but Jon DiFlorio and his proficient staff of well-educated trainers pride themselves on making the training regimen well worth the trip. Guerin said himself that the off-ice training is significantly more intense, in that it is the foundation for everything on the ice. He also said that by working with the boys at I3E, he wants to get a lot out of the training that can be followed up by a solid season in Pittsburgh. Guerin is devoted to being in good condition for Pitt. He says he wants to be more explosive for a guy his age, and of course at 38 years old injury prevention is among his goals. DiFlorio has great experience with guys his age that corresponds perfectly with what Guerin wants to get out of his training at I3E.

I3E athlete Bill Guerin and his Pittsburgh Penguins win the Stanley Cup Championship!

Bill Guerin surely can tell you just how much hard work goes into a winning season; nevermind a championship season!  We at Institute 3E feel fortunate to have seen Bill Guerin's work ethic in person.  Hard work always pays off, and it did in a big way for the right wing from Massachusetts.

Our congratulations to a tremendous season!  Hopefully the Cup will be making its way to Institute 3E in the near future...

John Paul Foschi signs with the Oakland Raiders!

After a brutal off-season training program, and a commitment to excellence second to none, John Paul Foschi was asked to work out for the Oakland Raiders on May 13th. Immediately following his workout, the Raiders organization knew they had a winner! JP Foschi signed with the Oakland Raiders that same day.  Our congratulations to a hard worker and a true winner! Institute 3E will be wearing Raiders jerseys this Fall!!!
