The Benefits of Being a Gluten-Free Athlete

The term gluten is derived from a combination of two proteins: gliadin and glutenin found in the endosperm of the wheat, barley and rye plants. Gluten is the protein that nourishes wheat during germination from seed to plant. The glutenin in wheat flour gives dough its elasticity and allows leavening; glutenin also contributes to the chewiness of baked goods. Most humans don’t have the enzyme necessary for breaking down gluten, resulting in a broad spectrum of adverse symptomatic reactions.  Some of the most common symptoms of a gluten-intolerance are unexplained aches, fatigue, headaches, joint or muscle pain, bloating or other digestion problems (1). Genetic inheritance, infections, liver function and even a summer birthday can influence gluten sensitivity. Practitioners are seeing evidence of what could potentially be called a “gluten-sensitivity epidemic” (4). Gluten contributes to lethargy, spikes in insulin, depression, headaches, and poor digestion (2).  Further research supports that “a gluten-free diet can do more than resolve gastrointestinal problems; it can also reduce inflammation, increase energy and clear up mystery aches and pains Some experts suggest that gluten intolerance can affect 1 out of every 10 individuals.” Being a gluten-free athlete should not negatively impact strength, endurance or training performance. Removing gluten from an athlete’s diet allows their immune system to rest and repair muscles post workout. A gluten-free diet improves gut permeability, ultimately supporting in the absorption of the nutrients imperative to optimal athletic performance.  An article titled The Gluten Free Athlete stated: Following a gluten-free diet does show similar advantages:

1.     With gluten removed, the body’s immune system can rest and absorption can be restored. The body can then function at optimal levels and repair muscles more efficiently.

2.     The hypoglycemic effect that results from intense exercise is minimized.

A gluten-free diet helps to maintain a stable blood sugar level during exercise, optimal for an increase in muscle strength and stamina

Nystr-Home

In July of 2010, one of I3E’s elite athletes, Eric Nystrom, moved from his hometown in Syosset, NY cross-country to LA. Nystrom was always an animal and a gentlemen in the gym and was regarded as a member of the family at Institute 3E. We can now enjoy spending some time with him since he is home for about one week and has returned to the gym. “Short but sweet,” he says. “It sucks but its something you got to do for love, man.” While he is here, Nystrom is getting back under the weights and showing that he still has it. Unfortunately on Friday morning Eric will be back on a flight to his new home. Eric will be playing the second of the three-year contract with the Minnesota Wild in the upcoming season. To make the week even better for I3E, we expect a drop in from another of our elite family members. In a couple days Maple Leaf Mike Komisarek will be coming through his old stomping grounds to train at Institute 3E. It feels great to have old buddies coming back from such long distances (west coast/Canada), not to mention all the NCAA college students who have returned for the summer. Our trainers have worked hard to build great relationships with our clientele, and these bonds are still strong.

New Beginning

For most people, retiring is an end-all to a career; for I3E athlete Bill Guerin, it is a new beginning and an opportunity to expand his skill inventory. Guerin recognizes how he now has countless opportunities and avenues to take. Whether it be for broadcasting, or working within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, or even something else, he shows no intention of calling it quits.

This is nothing out of the ordinary for this champion. Clearly Bill has strived to be nothing but the best for his entire career, on and off the ice. As he leaves his career as a player behind, he leaves with it great memories of 18 seasons of incredible success that he had always worked to earn. Bill Guerin is a two-time Stanley Cup champion, a three-time NHL All-Star, and a three-time Olympian. He has also participated in two World Cups. Over the course of his career with eight teams, he recorded 429 goals and 427 assists, a total of 856 points – the second most points of any U.S. born player in the history of the NHL. A couple of his most productive seasons came with the Boston Bruins. In 2001-02 he set a personal record at 41 goals. The season before that, he started with the Oilers and moved to the Bruins, and he recorded a total of 45 assists. A few seasons later with the Dallas Stars, Guerin hit 69 points, which was another personal record.

Bill’s long, prolific career sets him far apart from the rest, but what is equally as significant is that as he sets down his stick, he doesn’t look back on his career as a job well done. Instead, his numerous achievements are seen as a continued process as he plans to succeed elsewhere in the hockey industry. Everyone at I3E commends Billy G on his tremendous achievements thus far, and wishes Billy G the best of luck in all of his future endeavors.

South African American

Institute 3E warmly welcomes our newest client into this athletic family. Rugby professional Rudi Keil has come to us with big goals of self-improvement. Born in Johannesburg, South Africa with a father who played professional ice hockey in Austria, Keil had always grown up around sports. Ironically, his sports appreciation was more directed at soccer, tennis, rowing, and pretty much anything EXCEPT rugby. He says he never realized the skill necessary for the sport of rugby, so it was difficult for him to warm up to the culture of the sport. When he was 13, he played rugby for the first time in high school for KES. His team was called the Reds because of their jersey colors. The team wore no numbers on their backs because they were a team and did not want to distinguish themselves as individual players.

Toward the end of his high school career, at 19 years old, he played provincial rugby for the Lions. He played with this team for two years, and won the Currie Cup with them in 1999. After that, he played internationally with multiple teams in England and South Africa. This lasted him through the 19, 21, & 23 and under divisions. After following that up with 5 years playing for the Natal Sharks, he was headhunted to go to England to play for Gloucester, and then the Sale Sharks with Philippe St. Andrea. He now plays in France. After 14 professional seasons of rugby, Rudi Keil is now honored to be eligible for selection for the USA team.

Rudi knows as well as anyone that setting goals at short- and long-term levels is vital to guiding you on the path to further success. Short-term, Keil wants to play in World Cup 2011. There are many elite competitions in many different countries. Rudi wishes to play at the maximum level wherever he goes. As a 33-year-old athlete who continues to dominate on and off the field, Keil has set his long-term goal as being able to play for at least four or five more years. Rudi has no intentions of stopping his success, nor of halting his development. He recognizes Tama Umaga as his most respected opponent. Umaga is one of the best players in the world at the center position (same position as Keil). Tama Umaga is, according to Rudi, respectful, humble, and grateful. He always gives his best to others, and can always get the best from them. Keil knows that to measure yourself accurately in terms of where you stand as a player, you need to do it in comparison with the best. Rudi wishes to emulate such an attitude as well as such great success on the field. He enjoys playing against Umaga because to be the best, which Keil strives to be, you need to compete against the best.

Of course, that’s not the only thing you need to succeed. Keil clearly has an understanding that his off-field training is also significant. After dealing with countless trainers, Keil is convinced that nowhere in the world is as good as I3E when it comes to mental and physical development. Keil and DiFlorio met at a Poliquin program they had together. They really connected as friends and as professionals looking to demand the nothing less than the best from their bodies on every level. He has come from across the world to train under Jon. Keil descrbes Jon as super attentive and intuitive. The energy, environment, and quality of work at I3E are unique attributes that draw Rudi so strongly that he would travel so far for the best training experience. He says that it is more about where he can get an optimal training regimen than where he lives or travels. He has lived all over the world playing for different rugby teams, but this is where he wants to be for the ultimate training experience. He feels blessed to be training with DiFlorio because Jon understands the necessities unique to each athlete, but the way Jon transforms that knowledge to benefit the athlete is a gift. Jon’s hospitality, contribution, and giving nature are incredibly valuable to Keil. DiFlorio always goes beyond his call of duty, and always with a smile.

Keil is now a legitimate member of the I3E family and is ready to roll with an intense training program that will help him reach his goals of becoming the best rugby player he could possibly be. DiFlorio and his staff are ready to take Rudi to that level.

Bengals Call on Foschi

On Tuesday October 26, 2010 I3E athlete J.P. Foshi re-signed with the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals made the call to cut their tight end Dan Coats and replaced him with Foschi. Last year J.P. played 15 games with 10 starts for the Bengals, while posting career highs with 27 catches, receiving yards (260) and two touchdowns. The Bengals chose to sign Foschi over fullback Chris Pressley in lieu of Coats. Both players apparently trained with the team last Tuesday following Tampa Bay’s decision to cut Pressley on Saturday October 23rd. According to recent news posted on the Bengals website, in addition to being a “nice story in last season’s run,” Foschi also proved to be “a solid, veteran presence” in practice.

Kahn-Sideration

We are proud to announce I3E athlete Alex Kahn’s recent nomination as a top ten candidate for Thorp Award, annually presented to the most outstanding high school football player in Nassau County. Kahn, senior quarterback for the Hewlett Bulldogs, contributed to Hewlett’s 35-7 win over Lawrence on Saturday completing 50% (5-of-10) of his passes, throwing for 95 yards and a touchdown. In addition, Alex ran for 58 yards on 11 carries for undefeated Hewlett. This season alone, he has thrown four touchdown passes without an interception and rushed for two more. We are excited and proud of Alex's efficiency thus far, but we also know that it's early in the season and there is still work to be done.

I3E athlete Kathy Martin is officially the most decorated woman runner in the world. She currently holds 4 world records and 8 American Masters records in her age group. Kathy and her husband keep a list of all of the current records for the Women’s 55 division to keep track of all of her scores and her goals.  On the same list is the Women’s 60 division, because Kathy Martin has no intention of ending her reign over the women in her age group. The Institute 3E staff looks forward to working with her and taking her success to the next level. Here are the current W55 records Kathy holds.

Künes Nach Deutschland (Künes to Germany)

After 4 seasons of training with Tim Kunes at I3E, we are proud to see him take his abilities to the next level. After an hour-long ESPN special about his decision, he has decided in this fall…this is very tough…in this fall he will take his talents to South Germany and join the Rosenheim Star Bulls. The Star Bulls play in the ESBG, which is essentially the AHL of Germany. The season goes from September to June, much longer than the AHL, however they don’t have as many games per week. He leaves Monday to join the Germans as the only U.S. player on the team. We would like to wish Kunes and the Star Bulls the best of luck in Germany.

Nystrom Gone Wild

Institute 3E athlete Eric Nystrom has just finished his best season yet with the Calgary Flames, racking up 19 points (11 goals, 8 assists) and drawing even on his +/- rank. Unfortunately for Calgary, he was released as a free agent at the end of the 2009-10 season. Minnesota’s GM, Chuck Fletcher, was looking to add character and leadership to his locker room, and grit and good work ethic on the ice. Nystrom was quoted saying, “I’m very excited to be a part of this organization. The Wild is heading in the right direction, and I will give everything I have to help the team win.” This is exactly what Fletcher wants in his newest left wingman. Last season, Nystrom dedicated himself to his role as the “energy” of the Flames. Now, the Minnesota Wild will get the opportunity to feel the repercussions of Nystrom’s intense style of play for the next three years. The Wild and Nystrom agreed to a 3 year, $4.2 million deal on July 1st. The Institute 3E staff would like to wish Nystrom and his new Wild pack the best of luck in the upcoming season.

Jon Takes His Clients to the Next Level AGAIN with cPrime Technology

Biochemical advancements in the human body are always preceded by an exchange of electrons. The cPrime technology embedded in their bracelets acts as what the company calls a “bioantennae” because it alters the way your body interacts with the electromagnetic environment. The biological responses in your body are balanced and optimized when you wear the bracelet. At Institute 3E, we have seen it strength, performance, flexibility, and endurance. Founder of I3E, Jon DiFlorio, however, has tested the bracelet out for himself and will not train without it. During each work out, Jon wraps the bracelet around his wrist and feels the beneficial difference. Our professional athlete clients at Institute 3E also all wear the cPrime bracelet to reap the benefits. If you are interested in checking out the product, feel free to come to the gym to see what it can do. If you are interested in buying one come to the gym, or soon you will be able to purchase it online through Jon. However, as this is a relatively new product and company, this aspect of the website is yet to be launched. Visit www.cprimeusa.com to see demos, as well as to see the product in all available colors. The results are immediate and incredible! Check out blog.joincprime.com to see which celebrities are supporting cPrime, such as Michael Phelps, A-Rod, Joe Torre, and many more.

Billy G-Force

It took six games to accomplish the task but after hard work, determination, and some help from I3E athlete Bill Guerin, the Pittsburgh Penguins finally pulled rank on the Ottawa Senators in round one of the NHL Playoffs. As the Penguins advance to round two, they must recognize the most effective players who helped them get to where they are. Rightfully so every hockey fan hears the media obsessing over Crosby’s success, and often times that is followed up with how great Malkin is. Clearly these superstars have earned that credibility. However, in the NHL, especially at the playoff level, two men can’t run the show. The success of these guys has a lot to do with the “supporting cast” around them. As of now, Bill Guerin is holding the number 3 spot in goals (3), assists (5), points (8), shots (27 = above Crosby), and power play goals (1) in the postseason. He’s second place in +/- rating (5) and in lowest penalties in minutes (2). Guerin has been an incredible force behind the Penguins success in 5 of their 8 postseason games, and he clearly has showed intention of slowing down as he put a puck behind Montreal Canadiens goalie, Jaroslav Halak – a feat which Alexander “the Gr8” Ovechkin even struggled with – in the opening game of round 2. As the Pittsburgh Penguins try to win 3 more games against the Habs to move to the Conference Finals, Guerin will be a solid man to turn to. The Institute 3E staff wishes our superstar, Billy G, and his boys the best of luck in achieving his goal: Bringing the Stanley Cup back to Pittsburgh for the second year in a row.
